Sri Lanka is a Party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB), an international treaty governing the movements of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology from one country to another. Ministry assigned for the environment is the nodal ministry for implementing the CPB in Sri Lanka.
The Biosafety Clearing House (BCH) is a web-based mechanism to facilitate the exchange of scientific, technical, environmental, and legal information on and experience with LMOs to assist parties in implementing the CPB.
The Sri Lanka Biosafety Clearing House website, set up by the Ministry of Environment (MOE), is a repository of all aspects of the safe handling, transport and use of LMOs in the country. It, therefore, serves as the national equivalent of the BCH maintained by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The website has been established as a part of FAO/GEF-supported project on “Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB)”.
