International Day for Biological Diversity 2026

This year, the Biodiversity Division of the Ministry of Environment Sri Lanka under the theme of “Acting locally for Global impact”,  commemorated International Day for Biological Diversity on 22nd May 2026   at the Rajarata Hotel, Anuradhapura. The main objective of this celebration is to participate all the members in the society for biodiversity Conservation of the country.

University Students, Schools Children, National and regional Stakeholders, UNDP and IUCN  representatives and Ministry officials were participated. In this event, the Urban Butterfly Garden, built under the Managing Together Project was opened and handed over the Mayor of the Anuradhapura Municipal Council. The Keynote speech delivered by the Professor Siril Wijesundara on "The Importance of the Conservation of Biodiversity and Our contribution on it". Dr. R.D.S.Jayathunga, Additional Secretary (Environment Development) , Ministry of Environment, Dr. Buddhika Hapuarachchi, Team Leader(Climate and Environment), UNDP Sri Lanka, Dr.Shamen Vidanage, Country Representative, IUCN Sri Lanka addressed the gathering.

These initiatives promote biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable livelihoods through locally driven action.
