Introduction

A project to strengthen Sri Lanka’s regulatory, institutional and technical capacities for effectively implementing the National Biosafety Framework in conformity with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

Project objective

To Strengthen institutional, regulatory and technical capacitates for the effective implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in conformity with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB)

Project Components

  • Strengthening policy, institutional and regulatory framework for biosafety
  • Enhancing the system for Risk Assessment, Risk management & Risk Communication
  • Developing technical capacity for detection & identification of LMOs & strengthening Biosafety related infrastructure
  • Knowledge development & public awareness, education & participation

Outcome

  • Enhanced capacity to develop, implement and coordinate Biosafety legislation and regulations
  • Administrative systems for Biosafety are fully functional
  • National Biosafety Cleaning House (BCH) operational
  • National institutional strengthen for RA,RM &RC including monitoring & enforcement
  • Improved Capacity for detection and identification of LMOs

Budget
US$ 5.03 Mn
This will be complemented by that cost of around Rs.307.5Mn related to activities, undertaken by national agencies under the annual budget
