Updating Invasive Alien Species Risk Assessment Protocols and Priority List

Workshop on Updating the Invasive Alien Species (IAS), Risk Assessment Protocols and Priority lists, have successfully been conducted on 05th August 2024, at the Light House Galley, Colombo 01 with the participation of chairman and members of the National Invasive Species Specialist Group (NISSG), implemented under the Ministry of Environment.

This was the first initiation step to updating the IAS Risk Assessment Protocol and existing Priority list of Invasive Alien Species and the Risk Assessment protocols were last updated on 2016 and it has to be revised with the current observations and data. Therefore, updating the current fauna and flora list of IAS identified as an urgent and nationally important action as new Invasive alien species recording in the various area in the country. Therefore, Biodiversity Secretariat, Ministry of Environment has conducted this workshop successfully. 

Accordingly, existing risk assessment protocols were updated and it will be facilitating all the respective stakeholder agencies, such as Department of Agriculture, Department of Forest, Department of Wildlife Conservation, Sri Lanka Customs, Department of Irrigation, Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority, Marine Environment Protection Authority, National Aquaculture Development Authority and National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency to access the pre and post risk assessment of the species.
