Le Département de la conservation de la faune préserve la biodiversité du Sri Lanka. Les espèces individuelles bénéficient d'une protection légale par l'ordonnance n° 2 de 1937 sur la protection de la faune et de la flore. Les habitats et la biodiversité associée sont protégés par un réseau de zones protégées.
Le commerce international des espèces sauvages est réglementé à la fois par les dispositions de l'Ordonnance sur la protection de la faune et de la flore et par les dispositions de la Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d'extinction (CITES).
