Awareness workshop on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Valuation at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka on  18.12.2018
 
Sri Lanka became a signatory to the United Nation Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) in 1992 and it was ratified in 1994. The Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment is the National Focal Point (NFP) to the UNCBD.As the Focal Point to the Convention, this Ministry is responsible and has conducted several biodiversity conservation programes  in the country.
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Valuation is the main conservation tool to conserve our biodiversity. The value of nature varies according to local biophysical and ecological circumstances and the social, economic and cultural context. Ecosystem services are the links between nature and the economy, and are the values that flow to human societies.
Accordingly, as the policy making body, Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment prepared National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan to reach the objective of the convention as Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Utilization and equitable sharing of  its benefit. The main strategy of this action plan is to aware the General Public , researches, policy makers and university students on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services valuation. Accordingly, Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment conducted awareness workshop at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka on 18.12.2018.
Dr. Prasanthi Gunawardane, Senior Lecturer, Sri Jayawardanapura University, Dr.Athula Senarathne, Research Fellow, Institute of Policy Studies, Dr.Sisisra Rajapaksha, Senior Lecturer Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and Mr.Leel Randeni, Assiatnt Director, Environmental Planning and Economics Division, Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment served their expertise to success this workshop. The important thing of this workshop is both theory and practical sessions are conducted by the resource person.
